David Swallow Jr. (Wowita Uha Mani — Walks With Pride) is a Teton Lakota Wicasa Wakan (spiritual leader) from Porcupine on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. A member of Crazy Horse's band, Dave was born and raised at Pine Ridge and was taught the traditional Lakota ways by his grandparents and other elders. He is recognized as a spiritual leader, Sun Dance intercessor, Head Man of Porcupine, and a leader within the traditional Oceti Sakowin—the Seven Council Fires of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota peoples.
Fluent in the Lakota language and deeply knowledgeable in Lakota history, ceremony, treaties, ecological and spiritual traditions, Dave has devoted much of his life to preserving and carrying forward the teachings entrusted to him. He travels and speaks about the sacredness of Mother Earth, Lakota culture and history, and the responsibilities of maintaining traditional ways for future generations.
Dave is also a veteran of the American Indian Movement and has participated in significant moments in contemporary Indigenous history, including the 1973 Wounded Knee occupation and the Water Protector movement at Standing Rock in 2016. Now an elder connecting past and future generations, he shares Lakota teachings, history, ceremony, and prayer with people throughout the United States and around the world.
Together with his wife, Nyla Helper (Mato Wiyan — Bear Woman), Dave has helped preserve traditional Lakota prayer and ceremonial songs, including recordings of Lakota spiritual prayer songs and Inipi songs. Their lives and work remain rooted in ceremony, service, and the continuation of Lakota ways.
